87 4Runner - Idle Speed

I'm troubleshooting a problem with the idle speed of my 87 4Runner. It's symptoms are that once the engine has been running for a short period and then it is turned off, when I start it back up the rpm's will be below 500 causing it to run rough. When the engine is cold the computer keeps the rmps high. Today my mechanic couldn't duplicate it until he was closing the shop and as we talked he mentioned that there is a check valve in the fuel line, and if that check valve is leaking by there may not be enough fuel pressure in the line during those periods when I start the engine and it is already warm.
On Monday I'll take it back to see what the mechanic can find out by hooking up some diagnostic equipment now that we know how to replicate the problem.
